These large relatives of guinea pigs are common in the Patagonian steppes of Argentina but live in other areas of South America as well such as Paraguay. Maras inhabit arid grasslands and scrub desert.  Maras are the fourth largest rodent n the world, after capybaras, porcupines, and beavers, reaching about 45 cm (18 in) in height.  Maras can weigh over 11 kg (25 lb) upon reaching adulthood. They feed on grasses, herbs and shrubs. It has long thin legs and a very short tail, measuring less than 1.5 inches. The mara’s slender legs are capable of propelling the animals at speeds of up to 28 mph or 45kph.
