About this animal
Ostriches prefer open land, and are native to savannas and the Sahel of Africa, both north and south of the equatorial forest zone. The largest of all living birds, the ostrich can grow to a height of 2.75m and weighs in excess of 150kg. They have powerful legs and can run up to 50 kph for over 30 minutes at a time. The male encourages several females to lay their eggs in one nest which is known as a scrape. The dominant female somehow recognises her own eggs and throws out those of other females. The incubation of the eggs is shared by both the male and female ostrich.
Did you know?
Wild ostriches were nearly wiped out in the 18th Century by feather collectors.
