We are currently recruiting for a Financial Controller to manage and lead the finance function at Fota Wildlife Park.

An opportunity has arisen to join Fota Wildlife Park as a Financial Controller to manage and lead the finance function, offering a unique chance to contribute to a preservation and conservation environment in the not for profit sector.

Fota Wildlife Park has made considerable investment in the past 8 years upgrading its infrastructure and developing 27 acres of additional land and this is an exciting phase in the evolution of Fota Wildlife Park as it embarks on a 10-year development plan containing an immediate capital plan implementation phase.

In addition to salary there is an opportunity for an annual performance related bonus and also a contributory pension scheme available after 6 months employment.

The Role:

As a member of the senior management team the Financial Controller is responsible for the management of the accounting functions of Fota Wildlife Park ensuring that they are carried out effectively and within the law.

The role will form part of the senior management team and will be responsible for the day-to-day operational Financial management and will assist with development and implementation of the expanding Wildlife Park’s strategic needs and goals. The Financial Controller reports to the Park Director.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Produce a financial reporting pack on a monthly and yearly basis for senior management team and Board of Governors.
  • Preparation of an annual budget in conjunction with the senior management team.
  • Work with the Management Team and Board to ensure the implementation of the Park’s 10-year Plan
  • Manage the Finance Team to ensure the smooth running of all the duties assigned to them.
  • Work with the Board Chairperson, Board Sub Committee members and the Park Director to compile Board Meeting Agendas and Board Papers in a timely manner in advance of each Board Meeting.
  • Assist the Board of Governor’s Company Secretary in all aspects of Board secretarial duties and ensure papers go out in a timely manner.
  • Advise and facilitate the management team and the Board of Governors on legal and Company Law matters to ensure the Park’s full compliance.
  • Ensure that the insurable risks of the Wildlife Park are adequately indemnified.
  •  Ensure Fota Wildlife Park operates to the highest IT standards and are adequately protected security wise.
  • Ensure compliance with the Charities Law and  Regulations and the filing of annual reports to the Charity Regulator.


Key Working Relationships:

  • Work effectively with the Park Director and Audit & Risk Committee to develop and implement effective risk management strategies.
  • Work effectively with the Board of Governors, the Risk and Audit and the Finance Sub Committees to ensure that they are fully aware of the relevant issues and regulations that arise and that require compliance at Fota.
  • Work effectively with the senior management team to support all Park Operations.
  • Work with and lead the Finance team to ensure efficiency in all the duties assigned to them.
  • To work effectively with all staff at the park and provide leadership and direction when required and in particular when acting as Duty Manager..
  • Work effectively with key stakeholders such Capital Project Development teams, The Office of Public Works, UCC, and Failte Ireland on capital projects and grant applications.
  • Foster and promote ongoing communication channels with the Finance team at Dublin Zoo.



  • Furnish monthly and yearly accounts to both the Senior Management team and to the Board of Governors.
  • Ensure that all financial, tax, payroll related matters and statutory reporting obligations of the company are fulfilled in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensure that all statutory returns to the Companies Registration Office and the Charities Regulator including the Annual Returns are completed
  • Ensure that visitor attendance reports, monthly accounts pack and yearly accounts are produced on a timely basis.
  • Produce monthly Report to the Zoological Society of Ireland.


Key Skills and Requirements:

  • A professional qualification in Financial or Management accountancy.
  • A minimum of seven years’ experience, to include management experience
  • An ability to effectively lead and manage the Finance team and maintain a positive culture.
  • An ability to communicate in a professional manner including good interpersonal skills.
  • An ability to plan and organise work activities effectively to deliver positive outcomes.
  • An ability to problem solve and make sound and timely decisions.
  • An ability to work collaboratively with other members of the senior management team to enable the effective and efficient management of the Wildlife Park.
  • Proficiency in the use of IT systems.
  • A commitment to Continuing Professional Development for self and staff.
