"When most people hear the word superhero, they think Superman or Wonder Woman, fictional characters that day in day out battle all odds to win out against conspiring evil forces. But we on St John's Ward at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin have our very own superheroes," said Teresa Slevin, Clinical Nurse Manager , St John's Ward, Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin.

"Every day we see our patients demonstrate their incredible, extraordinary superhero powers battling the super villains of disease. Day in day out, we bear witness to epic struggles, our patients battling against all odds against villainous cancerous cells, our doctors & nurses arming and equipping them in their war and families and friends at the rear supporting their inspiring crusades, " continued Slevin.

"By taking part in this Superhero Run in Fota Wildlife Park, Cork you can stand with our heroes for a day. You will help our Crumlin heroes suffering from cancer, funding vital research into neuroblastoma, a leading cause of cancer related deaths in children and help refurbish and upgrade our Cancer Ward, St John's, she continued."

Also speaking at the launch, mother of Crumlin hero & cancer patient Adelina Corigliano who hails from Whitegate spoke of her reasons for taking part in special 5km walk/run.

"Crumlin is synonymous with the highest standards of care for cancer patients and their families. Day in, day out, the staff here at St John's Ward take care of us. No matter how bad anyone is who walks through the doors of St John's Ward you can sense the magic. For one day, I want to give back and show them how much I appreciate the care they have given Adelina, said Mrs Corigliano.

"I want to ask everyone to help the Crumlin heroes. The Crumlin team always manage to have the most incredible atmosphere and team spirit across their events. I can't wait," she continued.

Head of Marketing at Fota Wildlife Park also expressed his delight at the park's involvement "although the park is a charity itself, we are delighted to open the gates at the park free of charge for all the entrants of the run on September 18th, we are going to make it a day to remember with plenty of fun activities throughout the day."
