Native to the monsoon and evergreen rainforests of Southeast Asia, the lar gibbon inhabits both islands and mainland areas. It is predominantly an arboreal species, spending most of its time in the forest canopy.

Lar gibbons typically live in monogamous pairs, which is uncommon among primates, with both parents caring for their offspring. Their diet is primarily frugivorous, consisting of fruit, but they also consume leaves, insects, and flowers.
These gibbons are known for their vocalisations, particularly in the early morning, when pairs sing to establish territory and strengthen their bond. The male produces hooting sounds, while the female’s call is typically longer. Lar gibbons are incredibly agile; they can swing up to three metres in a single movement and leap distances of up to nine metres. On the ground or on large branches, they walk upright, using their arms for balance.

The lar gibbon is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, primarily due to hunting and habitat destruction. Only 10% of its original habitat remains, much of it in protected reserves. The largest populations in the wild are found in Thailand.

To drink, lar gibbons dip their hands into standing water and lick the liquid off. They also drink rainwater directly from their fur. This species is wary of water and cannot swim, which is why they rely on this unique method of hydration.

The lar gibbon has been a resident of Fota Wildlife Park since its opening in 1983. Located on one of the park’s larger islands, these gibbons are highly active, frequently seen swinging from pole to pole or moving in and out of their main shelter.
