Animal

Mara

Though often mistaken for a large hare or rabbit, the mara is the fourth-largest rodent in the world and is closely related to the guinea pig. Weighing over 11 kg when fully grown, this rodent has a brown head and body with a white belly. Its long, powerful hind legs allow it to run at speeds exceeding 45 kmph. In contrast, its short front legs are well-suited for burrowing, which it uses both to escape predators and to create dens for birthing.
