Native to the forests of Sumatra, Malaysia, and Thailand, the Siamang gibbon's range overlaps with other gibbon species like the lar and agile gibbons. However, due to its primarily leaf-based diet, the Siamang does not compete with these other species for resources.

Siamangs are incredibly agile and acrobatic, with long arms that allow them to swing up to five metres in a single move. Their long arms also help with balance when walking, and since they use their hands so frequently while travelling, Siamangs often carry objects with their feet.

The Siamang gibbon is listed as Endangered, with a significant portion of its habitat being lost to palm oil plantations in recent decades, leading to a reduction in their numbers. The illegal pet trade has also contributed to their decline. Despite these challenges, the population of Siamangs in captivity is slowly increasing.

Siamang gibbons form lifelong monogamous bonds, and both parents play an active role in raising their offspring. To strengthen their bond and mark their territory, breeding pairs often perform duet calls.

The Siamang gibbons at Fota are known for their loud and distinctive calls. They have been part of the park since its opening and can often be heard calling, especially when the park is busy, or when they feel their territory is threatened. Their diet includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, and willow branches.
