Curlew information

The curlew is one of several native Irish species that Fota Wildlife Park supports behind the scenes, alongside the natterjack toad and the white-clawed crayfish to name a few. These species are not visible to the visiting public, and Fota plays a vital role in essential conservation programmes aimed at reversing their decline and preventing possible extinction.

As part of the Breeding Waders EIP initiative, curlew eggs are carefully rescued from vulnerable and threatened nesting sites. They are then reared at Fota by a specialist team before being released back into their native habitats, by the Breeding Waders EIP project partners, once they are strong enough to survive in the wild.
