About the Swamp Cypress
A conifer that is commonly found across the wetlands of the south eastern US, the Swamp Cypress is well suited to Ireland’s climate. The tree is also known as the Bald Cypress and can last more than 1300 years if maintained properly.
Very tolerant to water, it is often found growing in areas under several feet of water and its resistance to moisture is one of its key properties – as the trees are grown to provide water-resistant wood.
Fota’s Swamp Cypress trees are located just beyond the Oryx house, on the way down to the Lakes area, and are slender and pyramidal in appearance. Its needle-like leaves are also unusual for a confer in that they drop off every Autumn and the tree can reaching up to 150 feet in height.
